Newcastle United are willing to trigger the £51.3 million release clause to sign Yannick Carrasco from Atletico Madrid this summer, according to a report from AS.
The Magpies are still awaiting their first signing of the window. Of course, Eddie Howe’s men are most definitely amongst the ones to watch in the Premier League over the coming months.
Their January signings went a long way to ensuring that they stayed up this past season. So the hope will be that their next batch of additions will help Newcastle kick on.
Obviously, one of the most pivotal deals was the one for Kieran Trippier. Bringing him in from Atletico made a huge difference to their season. And it seems that Newcastle are ready to return to the Spanish capital in the summer.
Previous reports claimed that they want Renan Lodi and Carrasco. In fact, it was stated that the Belgian is a player they love.
Atletico are hopeful of keeping Carrasco. He is a key man for Diego Simeone’s side. And with that, they have no intention of listening to offers for the wide-man.
However, AS reports that he has a release clause of €60 million. And interestingly, Newcastle are willing to pay that amount to try and bring him to St James’ Park.
Newcastle willing to trigger Carrasco release clause
It would arguably be a surprise if Newcastle do indeed make a bid for Carrasco Atletico are powerless to reject. The Telegraph recently reported that Howe has a transfer budget of less than £90 million.
So spending more than half of that on Carrasco would be a major statement. He is a fantastic player Simeone once described as ‘very complete‘.
But he also turns 29 later this year. So he may not necessarily be at the top of his game for much longer.
Nevertheless, Newcastle may perhaps be willing to make the winger their marquee signing this summer.
